Institutional Meetings
Suggested Procedure
- Plan at least one week prior to your group commitment. Have members confirm their participation.
- If you don't have enough members to participate call another group to replace you or switch with you.
- The day before the institution meeting call the one who committed their participation.
- If you do not have any confirmation call your institutional coordinator.
- In case of bad weather DO NOT cancel the meeting. Call your institutional coordinator before 6:00 p.m.
- If you cannot reach the coordinator call one of the volunteers listed at the bottom of the institution meeting list of the concerned meeting.
Institutional A.A. Meetings Format
NOTE: It is suggested that members attending the meeting sit separate from each other forcing visitors to be close to one of the members.
VERY IMPORTANT: It is suggested that you don't treat them as kids. They are suffering alcoholics / addictions. Even if they tell you that their drug of choice is not alcohol, you will find many of them admitting that alcohol caused problems in their lives. They are not just an Alcoholic, yet!!!!
- Welcome Remarks
- Silence & Serenity Prayer
Presentation on A.A.
- Preamble
- How it works with the 12 Steps
- 12 traditions with brief explanation
- Reading from the 24 hours day book (optional)
- Conclusion on A. A.: Step 1 & Tradition 3
Your Brief Story
20 min: One member may talk about his/her story for approximately 20 min or two members for 10 min. each. The stress should be on step 1 & tradition 3.
Discussion
Ask if any one of the visitors would like to share his/her story. (Make sure he/she leaves enough time for others to share.)
If there is no taker just have a mini-group discussion. "Visitors will already be sitting beside someone that they are at ease with." Mention that Addicts are not bad people. We are just sick persons. We suffer from an incurable disease that could be put in remission.
It is a suggested format. It was tested and had some degree of success.
KEEP CONTROL OF THE MEETING AT ALL TIMES!!
